A Brief History

The beginning

The Simkins Funeral Home was founded in 1939 as the Meyer Funeral Home by William A. Meyer. The original location was at 6235 Lincoln Avenue and relocated in 1946 to its present site at 6251 Dempster Street.

Two years after the move, in 1948, William Simkins, Mr. Meyer's nephew, came from Manitowoc, Wisconsin to work at the funeral home primarily as an ambulance driver. Meyer Funeral Home operated the only emergency ambulance service in the area until 1967.

Eventually, William Simkins married a local girl, Shirley Baumhardt. They raised six children in Morton Grove. Three of the children, William Jr., James, and Michael eventually joined the business.

William Meyer died in 1961, three years after the major addition to the original building was completed. His wife Anna assumed ownership until Bill Simkins bought the business from her in 1973, and changed the name to Meyer-Simkins Funeral Home. In 1980, the name Meyer was dropped, and the business was named Simkins Funeral Home.

Simkins Funeral Home was renovated in 1995. The renovation consisted of a new funeral home entrance, lobby, restrooms, and redecorated chapels.

Three years after the renovation, in 1998,  William Simkins, Sr. passed away, and the third generation of ownership, his three sons took over the business.

William Jr., James, and Michael currently own and run Simkins Funeral Home.

A Family Tradition

The Simkins Funeral Home has been serving this area with a proud tradition of family values and a strong sense of community spirit for over 60 years.

Tailoring funeral services to your needs

We at Simkins Funeral Home recognize that value and convenience are important in today's society. Therefore we will tailor funeral services to accommodate any specific or changing needs.

Whether choosing burial or cremation, one of us, the Simkins brothers, can take you step-by-step through all of your options. This approach will help you understand that although simpler services such as Immediate Burial or Direct Cremation are available, full traditional services with viewing are also available.

Making it comfortable and easy to select services

Each family brings with them their own unique set of perceptions, beliefs, and priorities. We, the Directors at Simkins Funeral Home, strive to bring all these into the proper focus and provide a comfort level to help families select services that are right for them.

Our Goal—putting families at ease

One of our goals at Simkins Funeral Home is to put families as much at ease as possible. One way we do this is to take as much of the burden off of the family as possible.

Families are often relieved when they find out how little they need to do when making funeral arrangements. We at Simkins Funeral Home can do everything necessary unless the family chooses otherwise. Tasks such as ordering flowers, placing death notices in the papers, and coordinating the clergy, music and cemetery are only a few tasks that are handled by us.

Treating you personally

The funeral business is a service business. And we, the Simkins brothers, treat every family as if we know them personally.

We at Simkins Funeral Home provide care and attention to detail that families not only deserve, but also expect.
